What is E-Rate Program

What is E-Rate: Program Overview

The E-rate program, established by the FCC in 1996, provides discounts on certain services and products that are essential for schools and libraries to receive voice, video, and data communications. Expenses such as internet access, network cabling and equipment, network maintenance and many other services can be discounted by up to 90% through this program. Discounts are calculated based on the percentage of students who are eligible for the Free & Reduced Lunch program or the level of poverty and location of the school.

Most elementary and secondary schools are eligible to receive discounts–including many private and religious schools. Public libraries and library systems can receive Erate discounts, provided they meet the eligibility requirements of libraries. Note that there are eligibility requirements that the school or library must meet.
